Modern Designer Furniture in Malaysia: Trend in 2019

Updates from Milan Furniture Fair this year. This year trend is towards simplicity. The few we would like to highlight here

Patricia Urquiola Designs Woven Outdoor Furniture

Modern Designer Furniture by Patricia Urquiola

Renowned designer Patricia Urquiola has created a collection of outdoor furniture featuring loose weaves for US brand Janus et Cie.

The braided weave creates a mesh that softens the look of the durable powder-coated aluminium frame. Patricia designed the chair to emphasise comfort and generosity, applying the same aesthetic to a lounge chair and sofa that are surrounded by the same woven panels.

The warm grey leather captures the timeless palette of Poul’s original design, working with the cool steel base to create a contemporary aesthetic. The elegant cross stitch on the seat and backrest still remain a prominent detail.

Midcentury Danish classics get sustainable update

Modern Designer Furniture

Danish brand Warm Nordic has launched a sustainable version of its Fried Egg lounge chair, originally designed by Hans Olsen in 1956.

To celebrate 100 years of Hans Olsen, the chair now comes in FSC-certified wood and sustainable Kvadrat fabrics with different colours for the outside and inside of the upholstered shell.

Options include Re-wool by textile designer Margrethe Odgaard and Merit, which is made of 76% recycled polyester.

Moooi launches striking solid wood table

Modern Designer Furniture

Dutch furniture and lighting brand Moooi has produced a large table with a sculptural base beneath the surface, created by Amsterdam design studio Atelier Van Lieshout.

The labyrinthine structure lightens the silhouette of the table by creating angular spaces between the stems. It’s designed with the same features as the Liberty lounge chair, which also has a very lean, angular composition.

Foam tubes arch over into bench

Modern Designer Furniture

Three foam tubes make up this unusual rounded bench produced by New York brand Format Fine Goods as part of its debut furniture collection.

The conjoined tubes are covered in wool and there’s an optional bolster that you can fix to one end of the seat.

It’s fully upholstered and you can choose between a range of speckled or muted wool fabrics. The Arches collection is made to order in North Carolina.

HAY launches elegant side table

Modern Designer Furniture

Copenhagen interiors brand HAY has produced a compact side table with an elegant tubular stem that rises out of a rounded granite base.

The powder-coated finish of the steel stem and table top bring out the dark flecks of the granite base. The stem pierces through the surface to make a handle on top and the table is lightweight enough to move around. It comes flat-packed and in six colours.

Architectural columns inspire ridged table bases

Modern Designer Furniture

Ridged bases stand like wide columns beneath the circular surfaces of these striking tables in the debut collection by Danish designer Lisette Rutzou.

The bases are made from corrugated metal and come in matte and shiny finishes that accentuate their graphic outlines.

You can combine these with marble tabletops to add depth and pops of pattern in a striking contrast to the monochrome base.

Danish classics inspire new HAY chair

Modern Designer Furniture

Furniture brand HAY has produced an easy chair that references 20th century Danish design classics.

Stockholm designer Shane Schneck wanted to create a new and affordable design classic for future generations. The solid wood frame features light curved armrests and comes in oak or beech.

The slip-on covers for the seat and backrest are available in leather or industrial-strength marine canvas.
